Best walking trails in Vaucluse

Last updated

Parsley Bay Reserve has a bushland loop you can finish in 15 to 20 minutes return, which makes it the best start for a short outing. Nielsen Park and Christison Park suit longer walks, one along the harbour and one on the clifftop. What separates the three is what you pass: a gully and waterfall, a foreshore track, or ocean views from the cliffs.

Quick picks

  • Short loop: the bushland circuit at Parsley Bay Reserve comes back on itself and reaches a waterfall.
  • Harbour distance: Nielsen Park's Hermitage Foreshore track runs 3.6 km return along the water.
  • Clifftop views: Christison Park's coastal path starts the Federation Coast Walk above the ocean.

Parsley Bay Reserve: a short loop to a waterfall

  • Loop
  • Toilets
  • Parking

Parsley Bay Reserve has the shortest walk of the three. Its bushland circuit takes 15 to 20 minutes return on natural paths, and it loops down the gully to a waterfall at its head. A footbridge crosses the bay overhead, so you get water views on the way round. It's the only pick with a loop we can confirm, and toilets, including an ambulant toilet, sit in the reserve, so you can finish near the water. Dogs aren't allowed here, so the circuit is for walkers. You can also walk in from Fitzwilliam Road or The Crescent.

#2

Nielsen Park: the longest walk, along the harbour

  • 3.6 km
  • Toilets
  • Parking

Nielsen Park's Hermitage Foreshore track is the longest of the walks at 3.6 km return, and it runs along the foreshore the whole way. It's out and back, so you walk the same path home, and outstanding harbour views come with the walk. Greycliffe House sits on the route. You get toilets and showers at the start, including accessible toilets, and parking on Greycliffe Avenue has four accessible spots. Dogs aren't allowed in the park at any time, so leave the dog at home for this one. Parsley Bay's loop is shorter and Christison's path runs along the cliff, so Nielsen is the pick when you want distance and harbour views.

#3

Christison Park: clifftop walking and ocean views

  • Toilets
  • Parking

Christison Park's coastal path is the start of the Federation Coast Walk, and the cliff top gives sweeping views of the ocean and Sydney Harbour. The path's length isn't measured here, so judge the walk by the views rather than the distance. A ramped accessible toilet is on site, and you park on the street along Old South Head Road. Dogs can come on lead. Dog walkers need to turn back before Gap Park, where dogs aren't allowed. Where Parsley Bay is a short loop and Nielsen Park is a longer out and back, Christison is the one to pick for ocean views.

How we picked

Parks were judged on what their paths offer: distance, a loop, the ground underfoot, shade, toilets, parking and size. Parsley Bay and Nielsen Park take the top two spots thanks to a stated length or loop, plus toilets and parking at the park. Christison Park is third: its path has views and a starting point, but no length. Where a walk gives no length or toilets, its cell in the table stays blank.

FAQ

Is there a loop walk in Vaucluse?

Yes, Parsley Bay Reserve has a bushland circuit that loops back on itself. It takes 15 to 20 minutes return on natural paths and reaches a waterfall at the head of the gully, with a footbridge over the bay.

Which Vaucluse walk is the longest?

Nielsen Park's Hermitage Foreshore track is the longest of the picks at 3.6 km return. It's a there-and-back route rather than a loop, and the harbour views are the reward.

Can I take my dog on a walk at Christison Park?

Yes, at Christison Park dogs can walk the coastal path on lead, but they must turn back before Gap Park, where dogs aren't allowed. Off-leash running in the park's timed window runs from 3:30pm to 10:30am.
