Sydney Harbour National Park: the long coastal route

  • 10 km
  • Toilets
  • Parking

Sydney Harbour National Park has a long walk on the water: the route from Sirius Cove to Balmoral Beach, about 10 km end to end. Plan the return, since the walk runs from one point to another. Along the way you pass Whiting Beach, Athol Bay and Chowder Bay, with harbour views for much of it. Toilets line the tracks, and there's parking at Middle Head. A few sections have stairs, so good shoes matter. If you want less distance, take the Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay walk from Taronga Zoo.

Quakers Hat Park: a bush walk from Pearl Bay to Pulpit Rock

  • 4 km
  • Parking

Quakers Hat Park's bush walk covers about 4 km at a moderate grade, running west from Pearl Bay to Pulpit Rock. The park is a strip roughly 50 metres wide, with a rocky shoreline on Middle Harbour. It's a point-to-point walk, with informal foreshore paths underfoot. You'll park on the street, as there's no car park and no public transport nearby. A separate Coastal Walk of about 3.8 km runs through too, so you can extend the day.

Best for a moderate bush walk of about 4 km on Middle Harbour

Clifton Gardens Reserve: the bush walk with facilities close by

  • Toilets
  • Parking

The bush tracks at Clifton Gardens Reserve run through remnant bushland inside Sydney Harbour National Park, with one heading to Rawson Oval. Glimpses of the harbour and the city come along the way. We don't have lengths for these tracks, so judge the distance on the day. Toilets and change rooms are on site, and Cafe La Mer is 200 m off. Pay-and-display parking is the option here, and buses over 6 metres can't get in.

Best for a bush walk with toilets and a cafe close by

Headland Park: bush tracks to Georges Heights Lookout

  • Toilets
  • Parking

Georges Heights Lookout is the showpiece on Headland Park's bush tracks, with the Sydney Heads, the Pacific and the city skyline in view. Tracks branch to other outlooks over the harbour, so you can stop at one or keep going. Public toilets sit in the park, and a car park is off Middle Head Road. Frenchy's Cafe operates within the bushland, too.

Best for views of the Sydney Heads and the city skyline

#5

Joels Reserve: a short walk to the water

  • Parking

Joels Reserve is the short one. Start on the flat grassy top, then head down the track to the foreshore and its boardwalks. The top has few views to speak of, so the lower end is where the water opens up. Historic Joels Boatshed remnants stand near the shore. Park on Julian Street, and expect no toilets. Its boardwalks run along the water, where the old boatshed stands.
