Best playgrounds in Epping

West Epping Park is the top pick for families with toddlers, with shade sails over the little ones' play area and toilets, BBQs and parking all in the park. The other Epping playgrounds differ on climbing, fencing and toilets, so the right one depends on how old your kids are and what you need from the visit.

West Epping Park: shade for toddlers and a big slide

  • Shade
  • Toilets
  • BBQ
  • Parking

West Epping Park has the most complete playground for a family with small kids. The toddler area sits under shade sails, and the play space also has a big slide and a small metal slide for older children. It's the only playground in our Epping list with shade sails rather than trees alone. Accessible and general public toilets sit in the same park, and electric BBQs and picnic shelters are close by. You can park on site, off Mountain Street. Its fencing isn't on record.

Best for: Parents of toddlers who want a shady spot and nearby toilets

#2

Forest Park: climbing among mature trees

  • Not fenced
  • Shade
  • Toilets
  • Parking

Forest Park is built for climbers. Its wooden playground sits among mature trees and has a rock climbing wall, a rope ladder, a balance beam and wobbly planks that lead to two platforms. The trees give the only shade, as there are no shade sails over the play area. Compared with the other Epping playgrounds, it's the one with the most ways to climb, but it's not fenced or gated, so keep younger children within arm's reach. Public toilets are in the park, and street parking is on Forest Grove.

Best for: Confident climbers who want shade and toilets, and don't need a fence

#3

Mobbs Lane Reserve: accessible play for ages 2 to 12

  • Partly fenced
  • Shade
  • Parking
  • Accessible play

Mobbs Lane Reserve stands out for accessible play. The playground caters for children aged 2 to 12 and has a wheelchair-accessible spinner, a triple swing with a toddler seat and a bird's nest seat, and a multi-play unit with three slides and a climbing net. Mature bushland gives the play area its shade, and the ground is new rubber softfall. It's partly fenced. Off-street parking is entered from Mobbs Lane, and Terry's Creek walking trails run through the reserve, so you can add a walk to the visit.

Best for: Families who need wheelchair-accessible play, or who want a walk along Terry's Creek afterwards

#4

Boronia Park: a nature playspace for ages 0 to 12

  • Shade
  • Toilets
  • BBQ

Boronia Park is the one to choose for a longer visit. A nature-style playspace for kids aged 0 to 12 sits under trees, with slides, climbing equipment, ropes, swings, a cubby house, a seesaw and a dinky track. The park also has outdoor gym equipment, a circuit path, BBQs with picnic tables, and public toilets. The sports field is used for cricket in summer and soccer in winter.

Best for: Families planning a half-day with children aged 0 to 12 and a BBQ

#5

Loftus Square Park: the pyramid climb for older kids

  • Partly fenced
  • Shade
  • Parking

At Loftus Square Park, a pyramid rope climb stands in the middle, with twirly poles and an extra swing set for older kids. The toddler area has a fort, a slide and a jet boat, so younger kids have their own space. Fencing covers only the Willoughby Street side, with the other three sides open. Tall trees around the edge give the playground its shade. The park has no toilets. Street parking along Hermington Street is unrestricted, and a bus stops outside.

Best for: Families who are happy with street parking and don't need toilets on site

How we picked

The picks come from size, accessible play, shade, fencing, toilets and BBQs, with only on-record details counted. Gaps show as blank cells, never as a guess. David Scott Reserve and Henry Brigg Park are in the table but not picked, because we know too little about them to compare them fairly.
