About Blue Gum Reserve

Off-Leash Dog Area at Blue Gum Reserve

Blue Gum Reserve has an off-leash dog area on its signposted mowed grass, which is open 24 hours a day. Off-leash play is limited to that mowed area, and the designated section sits at Dulwich Road opposite Peckham Avenue, while the surrounding bushland and walking tracks are on-leash to protect wildlife. Blue Gum Reserve has no fenced dog area, so the off-leash zone is completely unfenced and opens onto the Lane Cove River, where dogs can swim. The reserve has no small dog area and no agility equipment.

Walking Track and Wildlife at Blue Gum Reserve

Blue Gum Reserve has a walking track through its bushland, with the trail set among moist tall forest along Blue Gum Creek. Microbats, Grey-headed Flying Fox, Sugar Glider, Brown Antechinus and Long-nosed Bandicoot live in the reserve, alongside lizards, frogs, insects and several bird species. Migratory and native birds include the Powerful Owl, which has endangered conservation status in New South Wales.

Chatswood Rifle Range Remnants at Blue Gum Reserve

Blue Gum Reserve contains remnants of the old Chatswood Rifle Range, including an embankment-built target wall and masonry-walled shooting mounds. The range operated until June 1955, when it was relocated to Hornsby. Early district industries on the reserve land were timber harvesting, orchards, market gardens and small dairies.
