Former Parade Ground at Wynyard Park
Wynyard Park occupies the parade ground of the first military barracks in Australia, whose buildings stood on the site between 1792 and 1818. In 1808, the New South Wales Corps marched from the parade ground to arrest Governor Bligh, an event later known as the Rum Rebellion. The square was called Wynyard Square from 1848 to 1887, after General Edward Buckley Wynyard, and it was dedicated to public recreation in 1887 under its present name. A bandstand was built in the centre in 1888.
John Dunmore Lang Statue at Wynyard Park
John Dunmore Lang, a Presbyterian pioneer and controversialist, is commemorated by a bronze statue by Giovanni Fontana at the northern end of Wynyard Park. Lang lived at Wynyard Square, and he was responsible for Scots Church, which was built on the northern side of the square in 1826. A restoration program that began in 1998 included conservation of the statue itself, which is part of the park's heritage fabric.
