About Wistaria Gardens

Heritage Garden and Wisteria at Wistaria Gardens

Wistaria Gardens is a two-hectare heritage garden inside Parramatta Park, built in 1906 as the residence of the Medical Superintendent of the Parramatta Lunatic Asylum. Its pathways are lined with pink and white blooms, and wisteria is the signature planting, with cherry, peach and almond blossoms, palms and English elms. A small bridge crosses a calm stream, and Japanese tori gates, classical urns and lych gates stand among the plantings. Greater Sydney Parklands is restoring the Edwardian gardens to their former condition.

Open Lawns for Picnics at Wistaria Gardens

Open lawns at Wistaria Gardens suit picnics and play, and families spread rugs on them during the spring bloom. The lawns sit beside the flower-lined pathways, so visitors can walk the garden and then stop to eat or relax. The lawns are large and open, so there is room for children to run around while the adults settle in with a picnic.
