About Hallstrom Park

Adventure Playground and Bike Track at Hallstrom Park

Hallstrom Park has a large adventure playground that was built in 1998 and upgraded in 2016. The playground includes a mound slide, a wide embankment slide, a sandpit, a carousel, a turtle dome climber and swings, including a basket swing. A children's bike track is in the playground area, and a water pump sits among the play equipment. A continuous accessible path, flat to gently undulating, links the playground elements, and the mound slide has no steps.

Zoo-Themed Playground Artwork at Hallstrom Park

The playground at Hallstrom Park follows a zoo theme, with sandstone animals carved by Chris Bennett across the play areas. A stone crocodile lies in the drainage channel. Sense-activated sound elements and an interactive musicosaurus by Jerome Lynons add to the play. Forged metal fence and grate details by Libby Tulip and Phil Spark are built into the playground.

Sir Edward Hallstrom and the Origins of Hallstrom Park

Sir Edward Hallstrom (1886 to 1970) was a Northbridge resident who owned the Silent Knight Refrigerator Factory in Willoughby. In 1946 he gave ยฃ3,000 toward improving the land for recreation and sport, and the reserve was named after him. He chaired the Taronga Park Zoo trust for ten years, and the park's playground layout is based on that zoo.
